I was born in Worcester in 1967 and after boarding school in Malvern I did the whole Art College thing: Foundation Course at Bournville, Fine Art degree at Cheltenham, MA at Belfast. I lived in Bristol for a bit, then moved to London and gradually turned into a freelance graphic designer. It wasn’t until moving to Worcester in 2001 that I actually started painting properly.
Having taken up historical re-enactment as a hobby I developed an interest in military uniforms and equipment. My new hobby and my almost forgotten “skill” came together and in 2011 I started doing very illustrational series of A4 watercolours showing a historical soldier from front and back, the better to show the soldiers back pack and equipment. With all the friends I’ve made over my years of re-enacting I have never run out of interesting uniforms to paint. There are currently over 40 paintings in the series, covering 2,000 years of history. The paintings can be seen as Fine Art or Illustration and I sell them as giclee prints or as sets of cigarette cards with descriptions on the back of each, which have proved quite popular.
I’m not an emotional painter, but I get a great deal of therapeutic value from the act of painting. I am obsessive about detail and accuracy. I find watercolour is an ideal medium as I’m not able to paint full-time, so I need something that can be picked up and put down within minutes when time allows. I generally work in one-hour blocks.
