Artist information
This is my first Open Studio. I am mainly a painter, but I enjoy sculpture, collage and print-making too. I’m currently working through an obsession with trees – I love their sculptural and expressive shapes – the huge ash tree on Crowle Bank has been a particular inspiration, especially after my mother’s death, with its echoes of Louise Bourgeois’ “Maman”. I am also inspired by myths and Paula Rego’s wonderful paintings and etchings; I enjoy reworking traditional “women as victim” narratives, so that the flower maiden Blodeuwedd becomes a triumphant owl and the sheela na gig of Kilpeck church secretly revels in the discomfort of the green man. I’ve returned to plein air painting recently, which, together with life drawing, has been great for developing a more immediate and sketchy style. I’m hoping to incorporate this approach into future portraits.
