Elaine Tomlinson

I don’t remember when I first started to draw and paint but judging by the pictures my mother kept, it was at a very early age and I have continued in one way or another ever since. I received my first set of oil paints in my early teens and started experimenting with them. Later I studied art at teacher training college with the plan to teach art in secondary schools, but ended up channeling my creative skills into whole school art and display projects, in all the schools that I have worked in, regardless of my actual role, whether it was teacher or as head. I particularly love rooms and walls to come alive with student’s work and I believe every piece of work, no matter how naive will be an accomplishment, if named and displayed properly. I have collected thousands of pounds over the years auctioning my own and children’s work for different charities. Although now retired, I still paint, mostly with acrylics, using nature and the world around me as inspiration. I also write and illustrate children’s books and am diversifying my art by creating prints and cards using an iPencil. I volunteer at the Museum of Royal Worcester where I help to glaze and fire people’s work in the pottery studio. I love to learn about different techniques and it gives me great pleasure to have joined the Worcestershire Open Studios where I hope to continue to be inspired and exhibit my art.

Artist information

I began drawing and painting at a very early age. I was given my first set of oil paints around the age of ten years and have recently found a collection of my work all produced before I went to study art at college. Having worked in International Educational all my life, opportunities to pursue my creative talents came in the form of ensuring the schools I worked in were rich with student work and exhibitions. Since retirement and my return to Malvern, my home town,  I have had more time to pursue and develop my own ideas and have moved from oils to acrylics and more recently  to digital prints using an iPencil.
