Artist information
I like the clay to be the star, with natural colours and textures predominating. My work is very varied, from quite delicate torn porcelain earrings to stonking great pots. I work with mixed clays in stoneware and porcelain. I’m like a magpie, getting my inspiration from diverse sources. I make pots with extreme textures that look like they’re covered in lichen. Some days I make ceramic animals and birds – fragile young deers or goats, frogs and lizards crawling over pots, or lifesize wall-mounted donkey heads. Recently I have been exploring ancient pots and figures where I’m aiming for an aged, just dug-up appearance with a nod to many different civilizations, but all with an element of fun. Born in Australia in 1954. I moved to London in 1979, looking for adventure. I found it and continue to think of life as one long adventure. My careers have all been design based, from fashion, textiles, floristry and for the past 20 odd years children’s publishing. Now retired, I’m able to get clay-covered on a regular basis. I love walking into my studio and thinking ‘what could I make today’?
