Artist information
Multi-disciplinary visual artist creating graphic and design driven artwork
My images are primarily about pattern and sequence. My work ranges from representational photographs of the natural world, through to more abstract pieces; some are purely aesthetic, others are inspired by, and derived from, real world events and therefore reflect an underlying issue or concern.
I work mainly digitally but it is an important part of my process that images are printed rather than only viewed on screen. This allows work to be studied and reassessed over days, weeks or even longer, before deciding on the next step. Sometimes paint or ink marks are added to the work and it is photographed again, or perhaps a small section of the work is photographed in isolation in order to highlight a particular detail that might otherwise have been overlooked. Regardless of the final output, the composition and presentation of the work is key.
My practice is constantly evolving – driven by curiosity, experimentation and the challenge of always making something new. I enjoy the process of creating as much as producing the final image and I want viewers to be able to engage with that process as well as connecting with the work visually. I work from a studio space as part of the Worcester Arts Collective in the centre of Worcester. Please get in touch if you’d like to arrange a studio visit.
I produce a haphazard chronology of my artistic practice on Substack. It’s mainly visual – photos of studio life, work in progress and finished pieces but with some thoughts, aspirations and inspiration. Posting every couple of weeks, or thereabouts. https://richardnicholls.substack.com
