Artist information
I have always loved creative activities especially painting and drawing. After leaving school, I attended Shrewsbury School of Art for a year but life took me in a different direction. Years later when my family were grown, I studied Art & Design at the University of Worcester graduating in 2003. My main focus then was fine art textiles but I have returned to painting in recent years.
I paint mainly in watercolour and pastel (and occasionally acrylic). I am inspired by the beauty and many moods of the landscape around me both vast and small including the Malvern Hills and Snowdonia in Gwynedd the area where I was born.
I love the fluidity, radiance and immediacy of watercolour and sometimes the unpredictability. It is perfect for interpreting atmospheric and ethereal landscapes, bold skies, hedgerows and woodland. I normally start with flowing washes and layers of vibrant colour on saturated paper. I use watercolour pencils and inks for detail. My art is an emotional response to the mood, light and colour of my subject. I aim to capture the magic and mystery of the natural world with a blend of reality and the dreamlike.
