Eager artists rush to sign up for popular creative event
Media release: 19 March 2019
Registration for this year’s Worcestershire Open Studios event opened this week (Monday, 18 March) and entries from county-based visual artists, crafts people and photographers are already pouring in.
The popular event will take place over the August bank holiday weekend, from Friday 23 August to Monday 26 August, and is open to artists who live or work in Worcestershire.
Now in its fifth year, Worcestershire Open Studios gives visitors a unique opportunity to meet a diverse range of talented artists and discover where they create their work. Last year’s event featured more than 120 artists at 81 locations across the county stretching from Bewdley to Colwall and Badsey to Redditch.
Upper Colwall oil painter, Anna Cumming, was one of the first to sign up yesterday to participate in what will be her third open studios. Anna, who describes her painting as explorative and expressive, says, “I strive to capture a mood, and the energy of a place and time. This year I’ll be showing a whole new body of work inspired by the shores from St Ives to The Hebrides, and of course, the Malvern Hills.”
A number of previous participants have gone on to be selected for major regional and national exhibitions. One such artist is Worcester based Susan Birth. A piece of her work has been selected from a record number of entries to appear next month at London’s Mall Galleries alongside paintings by some of Britain’s leading watercolour painters in the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours 2019 Exhibition.
Susan says, “I took part in open studios for the first time last year and I so enjoyed welcoming guests to my home studio and art display and I’m just as excited about this year’s event!”
The event organisers say places are in high demand. Co-organiser, Sally Morgan, says, “We‘ve had an extraordinary amount of enquiries since the start of the year so I’d urge anyone keen to participate not to leave it until the last minute to register. Open studios is for both established artists and those who are just starting. It’s a fantastic opportunity to share their work with new audiences and share insights into their inspiration and creative processes.”
The deadline for entries is 22 April 2018 or sooner if all the places are snapped up before then.
