My work is inspired by the untamed coastlines of my native Wales and the glorious countryside of my Worcestershire home. I paint abstracted landscapes that express my connection to places, times and experiences, interwoven with industrial and historical influences and landmarks. I also create work in collage and avidly work in regular and concertina sketch books.
I paint with oil, acrylic and mixed media in response to my plein air sketches, found objects, and memories. My process centres around the exploration of colour, texture and mark making, to create a history within the layers of the image. As I work, an image emerges that connects with a memory or experience; it’s this connection which is significant to the developing composition. Whilst my paintings have a visible reference to the landscape, ambiguity within the image leads the viewer to connect to their own experience of wild, ethereal landscapes.
Last year was my first time participating in Open Studios and it was such a fabulous experience. Visitors were so generous in their feedback and despite being in the north of the county I was delighted to welcome so many art loving enthusiasts.
Mine is a fully working studio where I paint from most days. Visitors are free to explore my completed work and work-in-progress, as well as chat about my process and how inspiration translates to completed work from plein air painting and sketching. This year the range of work I will be showing has increased in variety and sizes available, with most available to purchase. A newly installed hanging system has enabled me to fill the walls with work, which I hope will improve the visitor experience further. I look forward to welcoming you and your friends, and sharing in all things arty.
