Anna Cumming

Anna Cumming — Painter

I am a contemporary landscape artist, painting in oils. After a career in property finance in Glasgow, then London, I rediscovered my love of painting when I did a course at Malvern School of Art in 2014/15, and I have been painting full time since, exhibiting with the Herefordshire Guild of Craftsmen in the three counties, and beyond.

I am inspired by the environment, where I live and walk each day on the lovely Malvern hills, particularly when the skies are moody, the clouds are whipping or the sun is setting… but I also love crashing waves, and the seaside in winter, and coastal scenes feature often in my work.

I paint predominantly with palette knives, and tend to work quickly and intuitively, putting colour on, blending, taking colour off… I feel it’s important not to overthink and try too hard. Sometimes it works, and the painting starts to paint itself, and sometimes I admit defeat, scrape a layer off, and park the canvas for another day. I try to do as much as I can in one session, keeping it fresh.

I think my style is reasonably identifiable. I confess: 1) I love a cloud… 2) I’m a bit of a colour fiend, and sometimes have to let fly!
