Claire Dingley — Jewellery designer
I have always loved silver. When my daughter started school, I was lucky enough to attend Silversmithing courses at Malvern School of Art, under the superb tutoring of Belinda Gilbert.
Until last year, I had a studio at the Fold in Bransford, which I shared with a fellow silversmith, making and selling our own work and also, enabling other local designer makers to sell their work too. During lockdown, that business closed down and I decided to work from home, where I am supervised closely by my two cats!
I have a small studio in my garden, where I design and make silver jewellery. I live on the side of the Malvern Hills, so the view from my studio inspires me every day. The countryside of Worcestershire and Herefordshire is gorgeous and very underrated.
I am passionate about the environment and only use recycled silver in my designs. Working from home keeps my carbon footprint low and any gems or semi precious stones I use are sourced from trusted, ethical suppliers.
I have always loved gardening but since being based in my garden, I am starting to be influenced not just by the plants but by the many pieces of Malvern stone that form the walls and rockeries. Rocks and pebbles have always fascinated me and I never come back from a beach without a few in my pocket – the amazing patterns and textures, each one unique.
I also always search for sea glass when I am at the coast and have quite a collection, which I love to incorporate into my designs. The sense of mystery about each piece – what it was, how it came to be in the sea, how long it has been tumbled by the waves – makes it so special as well as beautiful.
A selection of my work is for sale at Studio 4 at the Fold (run by the lovely Fi and Katy) and also on my website.www.silverladysmith.co.uk
