Jane Arthur — Textile artist

I am drawn to edges and borders, water, stones, lichen and ice, using pattern and texture to explore a particular time and place.  I’m fascinated by how a simple line of stitches can create meaning.  I like to use layers, bringing together fabric, paint and stitch, reusing, reclaiming and mark making.

Trips to Antarctica in 2002 and 2020 continue to be a major creative influence in my work, the limited colour palette, patterns in water, land and ice, not to mention the penguins!

I am also interested in the transference of memory through fabric, reusing and recycling textiles inherited from family, donated by friends, passed on or a chance find that resonates with what I’m working on.

In 2020 during lockdown I tuned into the changing seasons, using images of the flowers blooming in my garden and walks in the park, along the river and by the canal to create mixed media collages with paper, fabric and stitch. This has also resulted in several series of cards using similar techniques.
