Jane Arthur — Mixed media & textile artist

I work in mixed media and textiles exploring a sense of place in my surroundings. I am drawn to edges and borders, water, stones, lichen and ice, delighting in pattern and texture.  I like to build up my work in layers, bringing together fabric, paint, stitch and mark making, and I’m fascinated by how simple stitches add meaning.  I am interested in the transfer of memory through fabric, reusing and recycling textiles inherited from family, donated by friends, passed on or a chance find that resonates with what I’m working on.

Trips to Antarctica in 2002 and 2020 continue to be a major creative influence in my work, the limited colour palette, patterns in water, land and ice, the evidence of human occupation, and of course the wildlife.   After my return from Antarctica in March 2020 and during the subsequent Covid19 lockdowns I tuned into the changing seasons, using images of the flowers blooming in my garden and walks in the park, along the river and by the canal to create mixed media collages with paper, fabric and stitch.
