Susan Birth — Painter

My studio Hello, I’m Susan and I’m one of the three working artists based at Yew Trees Artist Studios, Worcester. In non-lockdown times the studios, along with a shared gallery, are open to visit Tue – Sat, 10 am – 4 pm. We’ll to re-open our doors to visitors from 13 April 2021. Do call in and say hello!

Variety and inspiration My art ranges from almost representational to more semi-abstract and conceptual pieces, mainly landscape and still life. I make bold use of colour, pattern and texture and use a variety of media including acrylic paint, ink, oil pastels, collage, etc. to create lively pieces that hold the gaze and attention, maybe striking a chord or evoking a thought, emotion or memory. I love to experiment with techniques and mix up media to produce visually intriguing pieces. I see variety as the key to my practice and I hope this draws the eye to explore my paintings. Recently I’ve been experimenting with more abstract pieces. Subject matter varies considerably since I tend to follow my impulses. I also enjoy getting involved in local art projects and meeting the challenge of a commission. In particular, I love to paint semi-abstract landscapes that may be inspired either by scenes encountered on my travels or by images that appear somewhere in my head waiting to be interpreted in paint. This sounds fanciful but it really does happen!

2021 This year I’ve been busy creating work for an exhibition at Elmslie House in Malvern in June 2021, including several mixed media paintings inspired by the Malvern Hills. I’ve included some of these new pieces here.

Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours In early 2019 I submitted a painting for the annual exhibition of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in Mall Galleries, London. To my delight it was accepted and sold on the very first day the exhibition opened. I also had work accepted for the 2020 exhibition which was initially online and then held at Mall Galleries in September.

Art in the community I exhibit regularly and participate in local art events. I’m a member of The Arts Society Worcester, organiser of an informal meetup group for Worcester artists and in 2021 a member of the Worcestershire Open Studios organising team, wishing to give something back to this event that helped me grow my art business. I’m planning to hold some ‘Fun with Collage’ workshops later in the year. Please do get in touch if you would be interested in taking part.

There’s a new online shop on my website containing Art Prints, Art Greeting Cards, Art Coasters and Featured products. Please do check it out:
