Artist information
Joe Eccles (b.1987) works out of his studio in Bromsgrove and has been practicing abstract art for over two decades. Working primarily with mixed media (including Acrylic, Oil Stick, Spray Paint, Pen and Acrylic Ink); Eccles is best known for his large format, bold abstract statements. He uses vivid colours and unconventional imagery to explore free-form expressionism. He is grounded in a practice of reflection and his work often embodies a profound exploration of the human condition through indirect metaphors, serving as a medium for introspection and a reflection of personal experiences.
Eccles’ art is characterised by its unapologetic embrace of colour and form, inviting viewers into a realm of boundless imagination and emotional resonance. With a portfolio that resounds internationally, Joe has become a symbol of creativity, drawing inspiration from the eclectic tapestry of life and his subconscious, delving into the depths of individual perception. His work serves as a testament to the universal language of art and its ever expanding boundaries.
Eccles exhibited in prestigious platforms such as the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham, the Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery, and the Herbert in Coventry. Recent notable projects include completing a 3m high mural for Birmingham Selfridges in 2024. He is currently working on a body of work which centers around the weights that we carry in our lives. His new works are built up in layers and the marks express the impact of staying with something over time. This series will explore the courage it takes to keep showing up, even when things feel uncomfortable or uncertain, and about carrying what’s ours to carry in life, whether we chose it or not.
