Artist information
Hello! My name is Mark Holmes and I am an artist who lives and works in North Worcester, taking inspiration from everyday things and experiences, but examined with a particular focus in an attempt to elevate them out of the ordinary.
In the studio I study still life: the subjects may vary but often consist of very contrived assemblages of rather random objects, chosen specifically for their interesting interactions of form and colour, texture and pattern, and the play of light within and cast from reflective surfaces. Seen in isolation the objects may seem familiar, even banal, but when lit and arranged like characters on a stage, they can be elevated almost to the surreal: they become performers.
Outside the studio I take inspiration from colours and forms taken directly from the local environment. They rarely identify as formal landscapes as such, but each is an individual response to a particular and surprising element found within it. They are real interpretations of actual experiences, at a particular time and space, but removed from their usual context and reimagined within the frame of a painting. Such experiences occur at times of heightened reflection, of being ‘in the moment’, and a sudden awareness of the strangeness and uniqueness of one’s surroundings.
