Artist information
The teacher in me will say that anyone can be taught to draw, paint, sculpt – but seeing what to draw, paint, sculpt is the privilege of the artist. Once your eyes are opened then art is everywhere from the collective ends of embroidery silks to the crashing waves of the Irish Sea, then there is the conundrum of what makes your art? For example: what do I put in this introduction to myself and my practice? Do I offer visual descriptions or profound concepts? The first is not true and the second a little pompous. Truthfully my work lies somewhere in between. My subject matter is selective and broad, l like abstracting forms into shapes and colours but nearly every idea starts with old fashioned figurative observation. Principally I work with charcoal, paint and screen print but also have a love of textiles so I like to let the subject and concept decide the medium. I believe art is a form of communication and artist’s should seek to keep that communication moving.
