Artist information

I am a painter who is inspired by low sun landscapes, quite often sunrises. I feel I am part of the large tribe who find solace in wild places. I hope my paintings bring elements of solace to viewers.

I live close the The Malvern Hills, Worcestershire. My local area as well as the River Wye, Bannau Brocheiniog National Park, Pembrokeshire coast, further afield in the UK and Norway are sources of inspiration.

I paint with Encaustic (bees wax medium), Oil paint and Acrylic paint.

My work is loosely influenced by Romanticism and Expressionism.

From Romanticism, I am influenced by the idea of the sublime when in the landscape. A loose definition of the sublime is a sense of awe at the vastness and beauty of the landscape, as well as a strong feeling of the implacable indifference of the landscape to our existence. There is another important strand to the sublime, which is the awareness of the very transient nature of our existence. These feelings infuse my response to the landscape.

I am filled with joy when in an inspirational landscape, my response to this joy is the impulse to make marks, to record this moment, this place. I do not feel my response needs to be realistic, like a photograph; much more like a distillation, the essence of the shapes, tones, colours and textures that excite my eye. My marks come from some place deep within me, not a careful outline drawn with the movement of just my fingers. In this respect my mark making is expressionistic. Expressionism favours very physical mark making that arises from the artist’s physicality.

As an artist, one is always striving for the image in one’s mind’s eye, there is no certainty of outcome, only a curiosity and an overwhelming desire that keeps driving one on to the next painting.
