Anna Mitchell Creative Clay

Artist information
I’m Anna, a ceramics artist and workshop facilitator, based at Wellsprings Studios in the heart of Malvern. I have lived nestled beneath the Malvern hills for most of my life and this area of natural beauty continues to inspire me. My love of clay and all things wild can be traced back to my childhood; days spent digging clay from the stream at the bottom of the garden and firing creations on an open fire. Fast forward a few years and you can still find me encouraging others to find inspiration in the natural world and express their creativity through clay.
My own work evokes a sense of place, informed by the seasons turning through the wheel of the year and walking in my local landscape and beyond. Recent bodies of work include my ‘Wheel of the Year’ pots – a series of 40 pots made in response to walking along the River Severn and around a park in Worcester near Earthrise Pottery Studio, where I used to be based. The walks took place over a year from Winter Solstice to Winter Solstice. Found objects were pressed into the clay & haiku are written onto each pot. The colours reflect the seasons and the pots become captured moments in time. My ‘Wild Things’ series were also inspired by the local landscape in Worcester. On crossing the new bridge over the river, I was struck by how the tarmac suddenly ended and the path continued along the muddy edges. The pieces made were in response to this contrast between the wild and the tame – the ‘wild things’ are needed to hold up the vessels that emerged, a nod to Earthrise Studio being an old boatyard.
My Creative Clay classes and seasonal workshops are for adults of all abilities and now take place at my new studio in Malvern. I am excited to discover what the rich history of the space will inspire – Wellsprings Studio is an old coach house, with links to the water cure and Lea & Perrins. Works exhibited for Worcestershire Open Studios 2026 will be in response to inhabiting this new space, closer to my heart and home.
