Acrylic Painter and Jewellery Maker

Dandelion Wishes is an impressionist acrylic painting of a dandelion clock in iridescent white and copper.

Artform: Jewellery & Silversmithing, Painting

During my career as a neurophysiologist, I have always needed a creative outlet and painting with fluid acrylics satisfies both my creativity and scientific mind. I use painting as a form of self-expression as well as for the simple joy found in creating. I find solace and a sense of freedom in nature and fantasy, and these form my primary inspirations for my work. My aim through my art is to provide a moment of escapism, and to draw my audience into a world of colour and vibrancy.

For my paintings, the consistency of the paint I use is critical, and adding a variety of different ingredients to the paint can cause mesmerising interactions, bringing a lot of texture and interest to a painting. Sometimes I create an abstract background which I can then use my brush skills to good effect over the top, and other times I will carefully control fluid paint to become the subject of the piece, such as with my well-known dragons or seascapes. At times I use 23.5K gold leaf for further embellishment.

The most exquisite patterns are often formed from the drips from the paintings, which I allow to dry into thin leathery sheets called ‘skins’. Once these are fully cured, they can then be used to form stunning jewellery, or to decorate the bottoms of wine glasses. Each piece is bespoke due to the organic nature in which the skins are formed. As I use iridescent and metallic paints in my artwork, the sunlight captures these particles causing a beautiful shimmer. You will find my paintings, jewellery and wine glasses on show during Worcester Open Studios.

Alongside creating, I founded Aetheria Gallery & Studio in November 2024, which is also home to my art studio. I exhibit my own work in the gallery all year round, as well as that of other carefully selected local artists in a variety of 2D and 3D media.

During Worcester Open Studios, I will be exhibiting alongside highly esteemed local artists Ed Elliott (Sculptor) and Wayne Janisch (Oil Painter), taking over the majority of Aetheria Gallery & Studio in Malvern. During the event, you might catch Wayne or me demonstrating our art practices in my studio space, or be able to chat with Ed to answer any questions you might have about his work.

Throughout the year, I and other artists run a number of workshops in the gallery. Please ask for further information when you come on your visit.
