Trying to find a personal artistic path after 40 years in education is a challenge. It took about three years to make what I felt were confident steps in the right direction and the phrase “never stop learning” became my mantra. The trouble is, a good memory and quickness of mind doesnt go hand in hand with maturing years! That said, I have never lost my enthusiasm to improve or my interest in drawing; I regularly work from the life model, paint plein air and share the weather with a group of urban sketchers. The graphic quality of line plays an important role in my semi-abstract compositions, providing a structure to experiment with colour relationships. Oil paint is my medium of choice but adding other “stuff” along the way often happens…graphite, oil pastel and cold wax are usually first in line to be chosen, depending on whether graphic or tonal issues need to be addressed.
My studio is an untidy haven. It sits in about an acre of garden and provides the space I need to enjoy a little success and learn from the many failures.
