Painter
Artform: Painting
I am a contemporary still life and botanical painter now based in Ledbury and I am exhibiting this year as a guest artist at Croome Court Gallery. I studied Fine Art at Worcester University and oil painting at Malvern Hills College and the Norfolk Painting School. My oil paintings are inspired by the colour and beauty of the natural world.
From 2019-2024 I was Artist in Residence at Spetchley Park Gardens near Worcester and these gardens were the inspiration for many of my floral paintings. I work in the classical tradition of painting but my use of colour and subject matter is contemporary. For the past few years I have developed paintings on a gold leaf background. I have exhibited widely in the UK including the Mall Galleries, London, the Royal Birmingham Society of Art, New Gallery Walsall, Sixteen Gallery Cheltenham, Abbey Galleries Tewkesbury and I have had solo exhibitions at Worcester and Carlisle Cathedrals, and Spetchley Park.
Why still life?
We live in a fast moving society bombarded with visual imagery and communication. I believe that a still life painting can help us regain the capacity to be still, gaze and wonder. My subjects are the stuff of everyday life – an egg, a flower, a piece of fruit, an isolated pot discarded in a charity shop. For me the ordinary can be extraordinary it is just a matter of looking. From each ordinary object an idea slowly develops into a painting composition, which, like a musical composition, brings together colour, rhythm and pattern. The use of light, reflective surfaces, or even gold leaf in my paintings brings the composition alive.
A theme I often explore in my paintings is about ways of seeing. Before I became a full time painter I was head of art at New College Worcester, a college for the blind and visually impaired. This helped me appreciate even more the many different ways people see and perceive art. The use of images within reflective surfaces in my paintings often hints at the world beyond the painting, an implied story.
