Steve Farmer — Painter

Growing up in Dover must have affected my fascination with castle construction, passing Dover Castle as I travelled to school every day. Although I have visited many UK castles, it was not until I retired that the urge to paint them arose.

As a professional engineer, my involvement with drawing was primarily straight line plans, and consequently I needed art lessons to learn how to produce colourful, castle representations, and in 2018 I started painting.

I paint castle ruins in either watercolour or acrylic and attempt to reconstruct or reimagine them as they may have appeared around 500 years ago. This involves site visits, sketching and historical record investigations to establish the criteria to enable a rebuild. It is amazing what can be unearthed on this particular subject.
