Mike Bagshaw’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in the gritty streets of Salford, where as a teenager he was selected to study under Harold Riley, a close friend of the renowned L.S. Lowry. He later pursued art studies in Leicester and London but felt out of place within the art world at that time. Consequently, he shifted his focus to earning a BA degree followed by a PhD in Psychology.
Initially, Mike built a career as a forensic and business psychologist and university lecturer. However, he eventually returned to his first love: art. Now retired, he devotes his time to figurative art and portraiture, conducting workshops, offering demonstrations, and accepting commissions.
Mikes approach to portraiture is to find the delicate balance between conveying the character of a three-dimensional person whilst preserving the raw, expressive marks of pencil, charcoal, or brush. See him at work and explore his drawing and painting techniques.
