I am a photographer who loves producing images that are fabulously abstract and richly coloured, yet are unmanipulated images of real things. In these images colours swirl into each other and edges are undefined, yet we can imagine shapes and forms. I use Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), Subject Movement, “Bokeh” and abstraction by isolation.
ICM goes against all I was taught when I started learning photography. Then, I was told to keep the camera as still as possible to ensure an accurate view of what was in front of me. Using ICM creates an impression rather than reality. It’s also great fun to do!
Inspired by colour and vibrancy, some Subject Movement images invite you to get “lost down the rabbit hole”, like Alice was on her way to Wonderland. You are forever spiralling inwards yet never reaching the centre.
“Bokeh” is a word derived from a Japanese word meaning “blur” or “haze”. In contemporary photography it’s to do with the aesthetic quality of the blur in the out-of-focus areas of an image. In these images the lens was completely defocused, or has very shallow depth of field, so the whole image is all about the bokeh. Highlights become beautiful circles with sharply defined edges.
“Abstraction by Isolation” means choosing to photograph just a small part of something rather than the whole thing. It can remove all sense of scale from the image and reduce an object to a pattern with no obvious form. These sorts of images allow us to make our own interpretation of what we are looking at, which opens up a whole new world.
