My paintings explore the intersection between the static and the fluid; between the imagined and the observed, intertwining the figure, painterly gesture and patterns taken from textile and wallpaper motifs in an ungrounding of traditional pictorial space. The textures and patterns are curated from my experiences of travelling and living around the world and evoke the idea of lost and recovered memory experiences, as well as the continuous shifting perception of the past as an ever-changing present is layered on top.
The imagery is based on fleeting observations of people moving through city streets or richly painted interiors; composites of time, where real life observations collapse into the material potential of oil paint. Suggestions of the surrounding urban architecture often remain visible amidst areas of human form which, at times, is represented in detail and elsewhere in the compositions is treated as though in a state of materialization and dematerialization.
During the open studios event you will be able to see both original paintings and giclee prints of my work. Drop in on any of my open days to learn more about my process as I work on a new painting or just come to have a look at finished pieces!
