Painter

Severn Boats: Oil on canvas 760 x 910 mm; price £3,500.00

Artform: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking

After a first one man exhibition in Greenwich in 1970 I continued to exhibit my work during my days as a student and as an architect in a small Worcester practice. Then, following a most encouraging exhibition in Worcester City Art Gallery, I thought that I might consider selling my watercolours for a living.

Going on half a century later, that experiment continues. My work (still mostly watercolours) describes my enduring interest in both built form and landscape, particularly in Worcestershire and the West Midlands. For a third of a century my wife, Linda, and I ran our own contemporary fine art gallery in Worcester and, thereby my paintings and prints became widely known locally. Exhibiting my work with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and as a Fellow of the Society of Architect Artists attracted national interest.

Historic buildings together with their settings, are my natural choice of subjects. Each image is an exploration, a response to architectural history, recording my own view of the continuing life of interesting and beautiful places, their vitality and decay.

Although many of my subjects might be well known, I do try to find new angles and novel aspects even of familiar places. Further examples of my work may be seen on www.davidbirtwhistle.com
