Artform: Mixed media, Painting
When you visit my studio in August, you’ll find me working from my home studio in the pretty Worcestershire village of Charlton, surrounded by the landscapes and big skies that continually inspire my paintings. My work is an ever-evolving exploration of expressive colour, dynamic textures and the emotional pull of the natural world. I’m passionate about creating contemporary landscapes and seascapes that go beyond simply capturing a view — instead I aim to evoke the atmosphere, movement and memories that a place can hold.
Growing up in rural Worcestershire gave me a lifelong love of wide open landscapes, while my frequent trips to the coast feed my fascination with the sea and ever-changing skies. I often begin with sketches made outdoors, then develop these ideas further in the studio, working intuitively to capture the feeling of a place rather than a literal representation.
I enjoy working with both oils mixed with cold wax medium and acrylics combined with textured pastes. These materials allow me to build up rich layers using palette knives and a variety of unexpected mark-making tools. Through experimentation with colour, texture and composition, the paintings evolve gradually, revealing surprising details and depth along the way. Each piece develops its own rhythm as the layers interact and the image slowly emerges.
During your visit you’ll see a range of finished paintings alongside works in progress, giving you a glimpse into how my paintings develop from the earliest marks through to the final piece. I’ll also have sketchbooks on display — many filled with studies made on location — which often act as the starting point for new ideas in the studio.
I’ll be painting live throughout the event and doing informal demonstrations each day, so you’re very welcome to stop by, watch the process unfold and ask questions about the techniques I use.
If you’re interested in learning more, you can also find out about the workshops and tutorials I run during the year, where I help artists explore a looser, more expressive approach to painting. And if you have a favourite landscape or coastal place that means something special to you, I’d be delighted to talk with you about creating a bespoke commission.
Above all, I hope my paintings spark a sense of joy, curiosity and connection with the landscape. I love hearing what people see and feel when they look at the work, and I look forward to welcoming you into my studio and sharing that creative journey with you.
