Green Room Rhapsody. Oil on canvas original painting by Worcester artist Margaret Powell

Artform: Painting

I am a classically trained artist, having painted for 30+ years in oil and, more recently, also in acrylic. I employ traditional techniques, honed in over the years, in my paintings; I paint local seasonal flowers, mostly from my garden, in still life settings. I am also known for my landscape paintings of Malvern Hills and other beautiful places, including my favourite Welsh beaches. I have painted many pet portrait commissions, and the odd human too…

My biggest artistic influence comes from early 20th Century Post Impressionism and Colourism and my paintings exude a feel of a by gone era. Locally, I am inspired and in awe of the beauty of Worcestershire, particularly my beloved Malvern Hills, and further afield. I am a firm believer that beauty is all round us, in small, everyday things in our homes and gardens. I enjoy painting flowers, mostly from my own garden, in still life setting within the sanctuary that is my home. I usually sneak family memorabilia into my compositions, to further connect with my subject/objects. I also offer commissions; whether is painting a clients special places or pets.

I am delighted to have won the 2024 Women Who Create Award and become a finalist in the prestigious 2024 Broadway Arts Festival. I regularly exhibit as part of Barbourne Artists Collective in The Artery Studios in Worcester, Artist Studios at Bevere Gallery and Number 8, Pershore.

During this year’s Worcestershire Open Studios I will be, once again, throwing the doors to my tropical city garden and home open to my art loving visitors. Expect to see plenty of original paintings, from big pieces to smaller works and some pieces ‘in progress’. There will be sketches, art books and bits and pieces that inspired me over the years, as well as some my favourite objects that you might recognise from my paintings. Tea and coffee will be available throughout; feel free to grab a seat in the garden and chat to the other art lovers.

On weekdays you can also watch me paint a still life composition. During the Open Studios event I will have original art, a selection of limited edition fine art prints, either framed or mounted, available, as well as greetings cards and a gift mugs and coasters in case you wish to take some art home!

NB although my garden is flat there is one big step up into the house, however in previous years visitors with limited mobility managed this without difficulty.

Looking forward to welcoming you back!
